Distinguished and Famous people from Tumby Bay
🤝 Janette Octoman
Janette Octoman helped found Tumby Bay's Country Women's Association branch in 1933 and became an energetic advocate for country women, children and public services. Her concerns included education, transport and postal facilities on Eyre Peninsula. As state CWA president in her seventies, she visited all 236 branches, a substantial undertaking even without the other demands on her time. She also repeatedly sought parliamentary endorsement, persisting despite rejection. Gardening, cooking and needlework supplied another field of activity: she sometimes entered as many as 150 items in the Adelaide Royal Show. An avenue planted at Lipson in 1970 recognised her long regional contribution.
🏉 Jack Connell
Jack Connell brought experience from West Adelaide and state football to Tumby Bay, where he led an exceptional postwar run. Beginning in 1947, the club won five consecutive premierships with Connell at the helm. Its history later recognised him as Coach of the Century. That achievement belongs to the rebuilding of local competition after the wartime interruption, when players and communities resumed their sporting routines. His coaching helped establish a standard against which later Tumby Bay sides would be measured.
🏛️ Sir Magnus Cormack
Sir Magnus Cormack attended Tumby Bay Public School after his family migrated from Scotland to South Australia in 1912. Further schooling in Adelaide preceded manufacturing work, grazing and a long political career. As a senator he became a vigorous defender of the Senate’s independence and served as its president from 1971 to 1974. His outlook could be stubbornly independent, including disagreements with leaders of his own party. Tumby Bay belongs to his early Australian education, before the grazing property in western Victoria and the parliamentary arguments that made him a conspicuous national figure.
